Jockey pumps are small motorized pumps that work with main fire pumps to compensate for minor leaks in the fire protection system and automatically maintain standby pressure. This reduces wear and tear on the main pump and controller from unnecessary and frequent operation. Jockey pump controllers are available for commissioning across the line. Sometimes in a fire pump system, water leaks occur at flanged or threaded pipe connections, valve stems, stuffing boxes, etc. This normal loss of water gradually depressurizes the system until the main fire pump is turned on. A jockey pump is recommended for the system to minimize wear and tear on the fire pump from unnecessary operation. In a jockey pump system, a small pump, motor and control unit/pressure switch are installed in the piping system. When the water pressure drops below a preset level, the pressure switch activates a starter that activates the jockey pump. Therefore, the correct water pressure is always maintained. An optional minimum run timer prevents the jockey pump from starting repeatedly. This timer guarantees operation for at least 2 minutes. If a fire breaks out, the pressure will continue to drop and the main fire pump will start. Automatic controllers also have a "Hand-off Automatic" selector switch for manual operation.
